Paula Clark, AIS, API, AINS, CIIP, CLP-A – Convention Task Force
1. Your name and Region. Do you belong to a local association, or are you a MAL? How long have you been a member?
My name is Paula Clark, and I am a proud member of the Vermont Association of Insurance Professionals (VTAIP). I have been actively involved with VTAIP and IAIP for 33 years. (I know I am not that old….I am seasoned!)
2. What inspires you to be part of Insurance Professionals, and what prompted you to join?
Initially, I joined for the opportunity to socialize with colleagues over dinner. However, my continued membership is driven by my commitment to fostering professional growth within the insurance community. I am passionate about inspiring fellow professionals and facilitating their development through IAIP’s resources. A pivotal moment in my journey was when IAIP President Pat Pearlman attended one of our local meetings and presented me with my CPIW Certificate. That experience deepened my engagement with the association and
solidified my commitment.
3. Describe a memorable collaborative effort where you worked effectively with others to achieve a common goal.
One of my most memorable collaborative experiences was serving as Co-Chair alongside Mindy Bero from CVAIP for our 75th Region I Conference in 2020. Despite meticulous planning and preparation—including securing registrations, booking flights, and finalizing accommodations—the event faced unforeseen challenges when the COVID-19 pandemic led to a global shutdown just two weeks before the conference. While the initial disappointment was profound, we quickly pivoted and successfully organized the first-ever Region I Virtual Conference, featuring CWC competitions and awards presentations. This unexpected shift opened doors for expanded virtual engagement, enabling IAIP members across multiple regions to participate in conferences and educational sessions in new and meaningful ways.
4. What is one of the most memorable experiences you’ve had as a member?
One of the standout moments in my IAIP journey was the successful hosting of our 75th Conference in 2022 after two years of postponements. The energy was palpable as attendees reunited, free from social distancing restrictions, to celebrate our collective achievements. The pinnacle of the event was our 75th Anniversary
Gala, where members dressed in their finest attire and enjoyed an unforgettable evening of celebration, culminating in a dance party with our dear friend Pat Murray. As it was her final IAIP Conference, that moment held special significance for all in attendance. Additionally, witnessing the overwhelming support, as Geraldine Plott asked the attendees if IAIP held a National Convention in Region I would we come ….thus led to the amazing time we all had at the National Convention in Providence, RI— a true testament to the dedication and
enthusiasm of our Region I members.
5. What is a good tip on how to share the benefits of membership with an Employer?
A strategic way to demonstrate the value of IAIP membership to an employer is by leveraging scholarship and grant opportunities. When securing funding for a course or conference, presenting the award to your employer highlights your commitment to professional development while showcasing the tangible benefits of IAIP membership. Additionally, participating in Of the Year awards is an excellent way to gain recognition for both personal achievements and employer support. Visibility through press releases and social media coverage elevates not only the individual member but also positions the employer as an advocate for
education and career advancement—enhancing recruitment efforts and
reinforcing their investment in employee success.
6. What Insurance Professionals programs have you taken that you would highly recommend to another member?
I strongly recommend the CLP and CLP-A courses, which offer invaluable
leadership training applicable beyond the insurance industry. At Vermont Mutual, these courses formed the foundation of our leadership development program, spearheaded by our Learning and Development Specialist. Over multiple rounds of implementation, the program has evolved to reflect our organizational culture, with senior leadership actively involved in guiding course instruction. Successful leadership stems from a genuine investment in employee growth, and Vermont Mutual exemplifies this principle through its dedication to professional development.
7. Which part of our vision statement has had the biggest impact on your personal or professional growth?
The leadership development and educational aspects of IAIP’s vision have profoundly shaped my personal and professional journey. Participating in the CWC program was transformative, helping me overcome initial apprehensions about public speaking and fostering confidence in professional presentations. Furthermore, the networking opportunities within IAIP have been invaluable. Throughout my involvement—whether on local committees, regional boards, or
national initiatives—I have been surrounded by supportive professionals who are invested in each other’s success. This collective encouragement underscores the true spirit of IAIP: when one member succeeds, we all thrive.
8. What are your hobbies, interests, or a particular cause you are most passionate about?
I have a deep appreciation for creative pursuits, including reading, sewing, and crafting—I always prefer making something rather than purchasing it when possible. One of my favorite places to be is at the beach. Beyond that, I cherish time spent with family and friends, especially with my two adult children and their partners, along with our four wonderful granddaughters, who bring endless joy and blessings to my life. People say that being a grandparent brings them so much joy and happiness; they are not kidding. I have been married to my high
school sweetheart for the past 31 years, and each day still brings us new challenges and adventures with our two dogs, a Boxer and a Shih Tzu.
Community involvement is another passion of mine. Whether supporting local veterans, fundraising for children battling cancer, participating in breast cancer awareness events, or contributing to charitable initiatives like Dragonboat races and Vermont Bank volunteer days, I strongly believe in giving back. Making a positive impact and paying it forward is an essential part of who I am.
