Your Brand, Your Voice: Leadership Through Authenticity

Five years ago, I decided to join the Puerto Rico Association of Insurance Professionals (APSPR) and International Association of Insurance Professionals (IAIP) without imagining that this decision would mark a turning point in my professional development. Since then, I have had the privilege of serving on its Board of Directors in various roles, and each experience has challenged, taught, and, above all, empowered me.

Today, I want to speak to you about the authenticity that characterizes me, about a topic that I am deeply passionate about: personal branding. The mark we leave, the way we impact, and make ourselves known in the industry. For me, personal branding is not just a positioning strategy. It reflects our values, our work ethic, and our commitment to continued growth.

Your brand is your voice. And when you decide to show yourself authentically, when you lead from who you are and not from what is expected, you begin to leave a genuine, lasting, and valuable impression.  In an industry as technical and structured as insurance, being yourself is an act of courage… but also of leadership.

But how do you build a strong personal brand in a world as competitive as ours? The answer is simple but powerful: continuous education, surrounding yourself with the right people, and daring to step outside your comfort zone.

That’s where organizations like APSPR become a strategic ally. Not only because of the educational opportunities they provide, but also because of the genuine connections they allow you to create. I have met colleagues who, just by sharing their experiences, have opened my eyes to new ways of leading, serving, and evolving as a professional.

Being an active part of a professional organization is not just about attending activities. It means being present. It means raising your hand, contributing, listening, learning, teaching. It means exposing yourself to different ideas and visions that challenge and enrich you. And yes, it also means daring to lead without ceasing to be yourself.

My recommendation for anyone who wants to develop their career in insurance or strengthen their leadership is clear: choose your path with intention. Ask yourself: what tools do I need? What skills should I develop? What version of myself do I want to show to the professional world?

And above all: surround yourself with people and spaces that encourage you to grow. Your personal brand is built every day, with every decision, every interaction, every opportunity you decide to take advantage of or pass up.

Thank you to the APSPR for being part of my story, for giving me a voice, space, and challenges. And to you who are reading this: make your authenticity your greatest strength. Because your brand, your voice, may be just what this industry needs to continue evolving.
